Handmade Roof Tiles – Zhou Zhuang, China

There are many skilled craftsmen in the area who generously share their knowledge and are all to eager to demonstrate their craft. Tucked in an out of the way location in  Zhou Zhuang water town, is an older gentleman making handmade roof tiles. The gentleman was only to pleased to demonstrate his process and showed us his firing oven.  During the demonstration he mentioned that he had been making roof tiles all his life. The craft of making the tiles had been passed down to him by his father and his father before him. If we understood him correctly, he stated each roof tile was 8 kuai (this translates to slightly over $1 USD per tile.

I plan to re-visit the area soon and take a translator with me to ask more questions about his process. For now though, I wanted to share the few snap shots I took with the iPhone as I couldn’t wait to share the information. It’s great stuff! Enjoy

    • I agree… It’s amazing how in this little community the evolution of modern technology has yet to affect and or influence them. Life continues as it was, is, and most likely will be for years to come. I love visiting these types of communities.

      Thank you for stopping by.
