Fresh Squeezed

Every morning I’m greeted with a tight hug and a pleasant, “good morning, how did you sleep.” This morning this wonderful husband of mine and the great father of our children greeted his family with fresh squeezed orange juice. Are you wondering or asking yourself what’s so special about orange juice?

It’s not really about the orange juice, not at all. It’s about the time he takes or carves out of his busy morning to ensure we have a great start to our morning. It’s about meditation while doing something he loves. It’s about ensuring we know he loves us and thinks about us above all else. It’s really all about love and loving his family. It’s all about us.

Mooncake’s for Mid Autumn Festival – China

I’ve read so many different articles on what exactly is the Mid-Autumn Festival. As best as I can figure, the Mid Autumn Festival is a time of gathering, eating moon cakes, and giving thanks for the harvest. A variation of round mooncake’s are made, shared, and eaten during the festival. The roundness of mooncake’s is key in the celebration as it signifies unity in a family. I also read that many people will take strolls and gaze at the moon; however, here in Luxu I didn’t see any such activity.

Due to the festivities, the primary children of Sino Canada School enjoyed an afternoon filled with laughter, song, and  moon cake making. The patient Chef and his assistant’s helped each child roll and mold a moon cake. They had so much fun and really enjoyed the hands on activity.

In case you are wondering, the filling for each mooncake was different. The variety included a sweet red bean, peach, pear, and pineapple. Hmm…

I also enjoyed the invitation and the opportunity to take part in the mooncake making process.

A Unique Baby Carrier

Quite a unique way of toting a child around. The child back-basket carriers appear to be pretty sturdy and environmentally friendly, a big plus!

This is a very busy part of town with none stop traffic. The carriers are a great alternative to having the children running around and trying to catch up to them. Enjoy!

While my friend was talking to this lady, or attempting to, I was trying to catch a clear picture of this little boy.

This lady was only to happy to turn around and show me the little boy. Quiet little guy.

Incredible courage

Thanks to Brad Stanton from Give me 5 Minutes who posted such a terrific post about the unsung hero and humanitarian, Irena Sendler. In the midst of horror of WWll, a hero, Irena, saves 2,500 Jewish children.

Give me 5 minutes a day and I'll give you a happier, more successful life

00000000000000000fasdfdseeDuring WWII, Irena Sendler got permission to work in the Warsaw ghetto as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist. She had an ulterior motive. Irena smuggled Jewish infants out in the bottom of the tool box she carried. She also carried a burlap sack in the back of her truck for larger kids.

Irena kept a dog in the back that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in and out of the ghetto. The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog and the barking covered the kids/infants noises.

During her time of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. Ultimately, she was caught, however, and the Nazi’s broke both of her legs and arms and beat her severely.

Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she had smuggled out in a glass jar that she buried under a…

#1 – Strange Questions From Innocent Minds and Mouths

Do you see black people where you are from? Have you ever touched a black person? Wow! I couldn’t believe such questions were being asked and that they were coming from an 11 year old. I took the time to answer his questions and explain there is no difference. The following is a brief transcript of our conversation.

Boy – Do you see black people where you are from?

Me – Yes, of course. America is very diverse with all cultures and people from all over the world. (I had to explain what diverse was).

Boy – Have you ever touched a black person?

Me – (With a smile). Of course, I have friends and family members that are black. My nieces and nephews are part Mexican and part Black. They are biracial.

Boy – With wide eyes and somewhat of a frown he said, “You Do”?

Me – Yes. They are beautiful children just like you.

Boy – No, not like me. I am light yellow and you are white. They are black.

Me – Actually, you are darker than they are. My skin is light but I am actually Mexican (had to explain that). See we are all the same just lighter and darker than one another. I further explained that my older daughter purposely goes to a tanning bed (had to explain this one to) and likes to sit outdoors to sunbathe. She likes to be really beautiful and dark.

Boy – He frowns and shakes his head. My mom likes to be white because it is beautiful.

Me – I smile and respond, yes that’s beautiful too. I purposely changed the direction of the conversation back to the lesson at hand.

Racial discrimination, oppression, persecution and abuse of all cultures is still very much alive all over the world. Our world continues to evolve into a greatness; however, discrimination is one topic and fact of life that we can’t seem to get beyond. A difference can be made one person at a time.

To Give – A Possible Difference

To Give - A Possible Difference

As we were passing by this man Mari turns to me and asks if she can give him some money. Of course I said, if it’s in your heart to give then you should.

I teared up at her compassion. We’ve seen this man before and we see him every time we leave the CityShop supermarket. Does it matter that we’ve given to him before? Does it matter that he could quite possibly be among those that beg for sport? Does it matter that this could be his profession? I think not. My husband says it best, “It’s not what they do with the money that matters, what matters is that you give with a giving heart”. I believe I’ve posted something similar before but its worth repeating. It is my hope and prayer that we can make a difference in someone’s life by giving back.

As we were leaving I looked back and pointed to my phone and a thumbs up, he waved and I snapped. Photo taken with an iPhone 4S.

Sleep deprived girls – Chicago, IL

Staying up late the evening before departure, getting up early the day of departure, a 14 hour flight with little to no sleep, & the excitement of reuniting with our college kids is enough for an adult to be worn out. Our younger two girls take worn out to a whole other playing field. During our trip, the girls managed to fall asleep everywhere you can think of but the hotel. As mom, I really did feel pretty bad for the girls; but, when we would ask if they would like to stay in for the day or for a couple of hours, the answer was always, “no”. So, onward we went to full 10-12 hours of shopping and sight-seeing. Oh yes, we are worn out even while getting a full night’s sleep!

Sleeping in the furniture section of Crate & Barrel.

Sleeping at the restaurant. What you don’t see is Mari half hanging off the bench.

Monica – sleeping in Gino’s Pizzeria. One minute she’s a part of the conversation and the next her head is down.

The girls fell asleep in Victoria Secret.

My poor husband, after the 3rd straight day of walking for 12 hours he had to take a nap at 2:00 in the afternoon. Wore out!

I was not able to get my camera out fast enough to capture the girls sleeping at Barnes and Noble & Starbucks. ::snap::
